Danilo Medina won the presidential election on May 20, 2012. He was the presidential candidate of Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD), while Hipólito Mejía who took great advantage in the campaign as the candidate of Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD) in 2011,lost the election. In the economic area, the Dominican economy grew moderately, but the financial deficit increased and the consumer price index decreased due to greatly increased public spending by ruling party. In the social area, poverty and unemployment have not been eased and crime still plagued the Dominican Republic. In the diplomatic area, the new president pursued bilateral and multilateral cooperation with more countries in order to improve its international status.
