Mixed Member Proportional Representation is adopted in the New Zealand parliamentary election, which embodies the wisdom of the combination of democratic elections and elite selection. In addition to the traditional two major political parties which represent left and right wings respectively, a large number of smaller parties are also active in the political arena, energizing the entire political system. In the 2011 general election, the political parties competed fiercely around their performance, policy priorities and leaders' charisma. At last, the National Party government was re-elected successfully under the leadership of Prime Minister John Key, which still continued to face the comprehensive test in areas such as economic growth, environmental protection and disaster relief and recovery.
