The development of social work in China has experienced a long and zigzag process，moving from charity，religious helping activities to professionalization. In the paper，the author summarizes the definitions of social work in China from the beginning of last century till now，which implies the growing significance of humanity and care in the definitions. Each definition of social work reflects the situation of certain period，and these definitions also play roles in guiding the development of social work at present.
