<<The paper explored the changing developments and trends of global public opinion on China in the past 19 years by analyzing the content of their China-related reports in three newspapers in the west:New York Times in the U.S.A.,Die Zeit in Germany and Le Monde in France. The paper has found that the global public opinions on China as reflected in the three newspapers have been changing over the years in accordance with social developments in China and in these three countries as well, despite the fact that they still maintain their own stereotypes about China. The paper concludes that(1) The overall attitudes as connoted in the three western newspapers are neutral towards China. This is especially true for New York Times.Their neutral themes include cultural arts,Taiwan, disasters, economy and sports while the individuals and institutions neutrally cited consist of overseas Chinese, interest groups, foreign companies trading with China and Chinese enterprises operating outside China.(2) The three western newspapers still hold negative stereotypes when they covered topics related with democracy, human rights, dissidents and party members, indicating that it is very difficult to change their ideological stereotypes despite dramatic changes in China.(3) Foreign news sources inside China are quoted as most negative while the negative percentage exceeds 30% when China is compared with other countries (in particular the U.S.A,Japan,Germany and Russia),demonstrating their ideological superiority.
