During the past several months, the uprising in Tunisia rapidly spread to Arab countries in North Africa and the Middle East: Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Syria, and other countries are all facing varying degrees of unrest. At present, there has already been regime change in Egypt and Libya, and anti-government protests are starting or continuing in other states. The Arab unrest began due to the livelihood crisis whereby the people suffered job losses, poverty, and injustice. However, the street demonstrations soon evolved into political movements calling for liberty, democracy, and equality. Also known as the Arab Spring, this movement not only caused a political crisis in this region, but also affected the existing security patterns in the region. Given the current situation, the unrest in the Middle East and North Africa is likely to continue for the foreseeable future.
