The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP-16) held in Cancun, Mexico, from 29 November to 10 December, focused on negotiations on emission reduction after expiration of the "Kyoto Protocol" commitment at the end of 2012 as well as on issues related to developing countries, such as financial assistance and technology transfer. Based on compromise, the 193 parties reached a package of agreements to make efforts to cope with climate change and to lay a foundation for talks at the next conference in Durban, South Africa, to be held at the end of 2011. The Cancun conference failed to make substantial progress on a second commitment period to the Kyoto protocol. Because the time left before 2013 is limited, the UN climate negotiations are under great pressure. The negotiations leading to the Durban conference are full of ups and downs and uncertainties.
