Canada has a first-class food safety system in the world highlighted by its efficient inspection agency，advanced legal framework and creative public-private partnership practice. A notable new development of Canadian food system is the enactment of Safe Food for Canadians Act on 22 November 2012，which is expected to be fully implemented in the beginning of 2015. This Act consolidates and modernizes those existing laws and regulations on food with a view to securing safer food for Canadians and seeking to strengthen Canada’s comparative advantage in world food trade. China can draw some inspirations from the new development of Canadian food safety legal system. This paper proposes four recommendations for food safety governance in China including practicing public-private partnership，building science-based inspection agencies，strengthening international cooperation and resorting to the global legal framework for food safety to resist the potential food trade protectionism.
