<<This paper examines the concept of “autonomy of persons with psycho-social disabilities”as stated in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities(CRPD)from the perspective of international human rights law,and gives a brief introduction to the system of adult guardianship in China and the concept of “supported decision-making” model. This is followed by a qualitative study on how the intervention of professional social workers can limit the traditional parental power over a person with mental disability and thereby realize theself-determination of the clients and their autonomy. The paper thus argues that the promotion of social workers’ intervention can be regarded as a measure of implementing the CRPD stipulations on autonomy in China before the reform of the adult guardianship system has been completed. A number of suggestions on relevant research and policies are provided in the last part.
