The closed policy adopted in the Ming and Qing dynasties has turned Macau into the only gateway to the cultural exchange between the east and the west. Despite its small size and population, Macau has played an important role in the contemporary history of China, particularly in the process of sino-western cultural exchange, which lasted for more than four hundred years. However, owing to its history and various social factors, studies conducted by local scholars on such a topic are sparse, and lack of significant findings. After the handover, drastic development has been made in the economy of Macau and its tertiary education. More emphasis has been put on studies of sino-western cultural exchange, with an obvious increase in the number of research institutes and research supporting staff. Moreover, to make research in their respect more fruitful, more efforts have been put on developing a more refined and mature research system, with clearer research objectives. At present, research on sino-western cultural exchange is growing both paradigmatically and syntagmatically, with the aim of turning Macau into the base of research of this kind in China.
