2013年3月，李克强总理访问巴基斯坦，提出了中巴两国携手打造“中巴经济走廊”的倡议，巴基斯坦政府给出了积极回应。同年7月，巴基斯坦总理谢里夫赢得大选后首访中国，与中国领导人就“中巴经济走廊”建设取得共识，并开始制定“中巴经济走廊”远景规划，落实建设项目。2015年4月，习近平主席访问巴基斯坦，将“中巴经济走廊建设”推向更高水平，使其真正成为“一带一路”的旗舰与标杆。
<<Pakistan reacted positively to the initiative of “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor”，proposed by Premier Li Keqiang during his visit to Pakistan in March 2013. In July of the same year，during Shariff’s first visit to China after winning the general election，Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shariff reached a consensus with Chinese leader on the construction of the “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor”，thus，they started setting up a perspective plan on the “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor” and decided upon construction projects. President Xi Jinping pushed up the construction of “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor” to a higher level during his visit to Pakistan in April 2015，making it an exact flagship and benchmark of “the Belt and Road”.
