The failures of safety functions of auto controlling systems have led to the frequent recalls of automobiles. The government，enterprises，and consumers have paid more attention on auto electric and electronic function safety. After 6 years of revision，the ISO have issued the ISO 26262 standard at the end of 2011. This paper introduces the background，purpose，scale，contents，and challenges and opportunities of the establishment and application of this standard and puts forward the latest progress of the establishment of the second revised version. Secondly，this paper also analyzes the applications of ISO 26262 both in home and abroad，giving a direction to the development and application of manufacturer. Finally，this paper also covers the establishment of the Road Vehicle Function Safety （a national recommended standard） and the main tasks during the 13^th Five Year Plan period.
