Guangzhou has a leading role in developing social assistance system and exploring the contributions that social work could make for social assistance system in China. In this paper，the authors introduce the role of social work playing in social assistance system of Guangzhou from the aspects of policy environment，service experiences，characteristics and service orientation. Based on the comparative analysis，this paper discusses the problems that arise in the process of social work intervening in social assistance. Furthermore，this paper provides some suggestions for the future practical developments，such as the purchase of public service，the cooperation of transdisciplinary organizations，and the creation of advanced environment for professional service.
