在国外，“经济特区”（SEZs）、“特区束”（SEZClusters）或“类特区”（Similar-SEZs）被共同视为我国特区发展战略的研究对象。特区的性质、意义、特征、特区的理论基础、研究范式与模型、特区发展问题及世界启示等都构成了研究我国经济特区的具体领域和方向。这些研究无论是对我国特区研究、特区实践，还是分析中国体制改革与经济转型都具有重要的借鉴意义。
<<The SEZs，SEZ Clusters and Similar-SEZs are studied overseas as the SEZ developing strategy of China.The study field and direction on SEZ of China contains the SEZs’ nature，meaning，character，theoretic foundation，mode，problems，its experiences and lessons.All these play a very important role in the study and practices on SEZ as well as in the system reform and economy transition.
