Since Comrade Deng Xiaoping made direction to expand the scale of sending Chinese students to study abroad in 1978，the Chinese Government began to set up state-sponsored scholarship programmes and send excellent students for overseas studies.During the past 30 years，the state-sponsored scholarships work has achieved great success，cultivating great number of talents in various fields，making great contribution to the development of China’s higher education，improving academic and scientific research，and enhancing the level of social and economic development. China Scholarship Council，founded in 1996，renders state-sponsored scholarship programmes more open，more just and fairer.The implementation of the policy “Individual application，institution nomination，expert evaluation，and selected by merits，and bonded by scholarship” ensures the quality of the students for overseas studies，which further enhances the efficiency of the scheme. In accordance with the strategies of “strengthening the nation with trained personnel” and “rejuvenating the country through science and education”，approved by the State Council，the State-sponsored Graduate Scholarship Scheme for Building Chinese Top Universities was established in 2007，aiming to select excellent students to top universities in the world to follow their famous supervisors，cultivate top innovative personnel for China’s development in the future and provide necessary talents for the endeavor to make China an innovative nation. <<
